Bike Handling and Safety

Riding the bike leg well and safely: cornering, descending, sharing the road, hazards, punctures, bike checks, gearing and fuelling on the move.
Each test below is ten questions on Insporta. The list under a test is what the questions check: one fact per question, with the source it was written from. Read it before the test, or come back from a wrong answer.
Test 1Cornering and Descending
Tyres can only do so much at once: braking hard while leaned over uses up grip that is needed for turning. Slow first, then turn.

A bike tends to follow your gaze, so looking to the exit produces a smooth line. Staring at a fixed near point pulls you towards it.

The outside pedal down keeps the inside pedal clear of the road and loads the tyres for grip. An inside pedal down risks striking the tarmac.

The drops lower your centre of gravity and give the strongest, most controlled grip on the brake levers. Bent elbows let the bike move under you.

Short repeated applications hold your speed without letting rims or rotors overheat, which is what continuous dragging causes.

Braking transfers load onto the front wheel, so it has the most grip available. Riders should learn to use the front confidently, shifting weight back.

Behind a blind bend there may be a stopped car, gravel or a crashed rider, and you cannot avoid what you have not seen yet, so your sight line sets your speed rather than how good the corner looks. Hold a wide entry so the bend opens up earlier, and accelerate only once the exit is genuinely in view.

On an open road the racing line stops at your lane edge. Crossing the centre line is both a rule violation in most races and a head-on risk.

On aero bars your hands are away from the brakes and your steering leverage is poor, so move to the base bar wherever control matters more than speed.

A turnaround is far tighter than any road bend, so the speed has to be gone before you turn and the inside pedal has to be up to clear the tarmac. Turnarounds are also one of the places where draft-zone handling varies between races, so read the athlete guide for your event.

Test 2Riding Near Others Legally
A drawn-out pass leaves two riders side by side for longer than necessary, and cutting back in too early can take out the rider you just passed.

A call given in advance lets the rider hold their line and expect you. Passing is normally on the left, and the race briefing confirms the side; a warning that arrives once you are alongside is too late.

That position keeps you clear of drains and debris while leaving room for faster riders and vehicles to pass safely.

Predictability is what keeps a pass safe. Any sudden change of line or speed by the rider being passed is what causes contact.

Riding abreast obstructs the course and is a position offence in non-draft racing; you may only be alongside while overtaking.

A front wheel that is deflected sideways cannot be recovered. The rider in front often feels nothing at all, which is why the risk is entirely yours.

A rider behind needs a moment to react. Progressive braking plus a call gives them that; a stab at the levers or an unannounced swerve does not.

A hand pointed low at the hazard, given in good time, tells following riders both what is coming and which side to avoid.

'Car back' warns of a vehicle approaching from behind; 'car up' or 'car front' is the equivalent for one coming towards you.

On a multi-lap course the riders beside you can be a whole lap ahead of or behind you, so someone else's speed tells you nothing about your own position. Pass and get passed by exactly the same rules whatever lap anyone is on, and keep your own lap count against the athlete guide.

Test 3Roadcraft and Hazards
Unweighting lets your limbs absorb the impact instead of the wheels, which greatly reduces the risk of a pinch puncture or a rim dent.

A shallow angle lets a narrow tyre drop into the slot and be trapped. Crossing square, upright and off the brakes keeps the wheel on top of the gaps.

Smooth paint and metal become slippery once wet. Cross them upright and with no braking, steering or hard pedalling.

Water collects in exactly the places where the road surface has failed, so an opaque puddle should be assumed to be a hole until proved otherwise.

Road furniture stays in place on a normal race course. Early sightlines and an early line choice are what stop it becoming a crash point.

Unless the road is formally closed, police-controlled, or the marshal is specifically accredited to control traffic, marshals only advise and warn. Assume they cannot hold vehicles: the junction remains your responsibility.

Low sun blinds drivers as well as you, and it can make an approaching cyclist effectively invisible. Reduce speed and be ready for vehicles not to yield.

Animals move unpredictably, so speed and hard swerves both remove your options. Slowing early keeps a stop or a change of line available.

Gravel gives very little grip, so the safest way across is upright, straight and with no sudden inputs; save any braking for clear tarmac.

Riders arriving behind may not see you in time, so clearing the road comes first. Only then check yourself, the wheels, bars and brakes.

Test 4Fixing a Puncture
The most common roadside mistake is fitting a fresh tube while the sharp object is still stuck in the casing, which gives you a second flat within a few hundred metres.

A sharp point can be almost invisible from outside but is easily felt from within; go slowly and lightly, because whatever you are hunting for can cut a finger.

A pinch flat happens when a hard edge squashes the tube against the rim, leaving two small holes side by side; correct pressure and taking weight off the wheels are the main defences.

With the chain on the smallest sprocket the derailleur is at its most relaxed position, so the wheel drops out and goes back in with far less fighting.

A tube caught under the bead will blow out, often loudly, as pressure rises. Part-inflating first lets you spot and free it, and shows whether the bead is seated evenly all the way round.

CO2 also seeps through the tube wall faster than air, so a tyre inflated with it goes soft over the following day and should be re-inflated with a pump afterwards.

Sealant handles small tread punctures on its own; bigger holes need a plug, or the valve removed and a normal inner tube fitted to get you home.

A boot is any tough patch (a purpose-made one, a folded note or a gel wrapper) laid inside the tyre over the cut; it is a get-home fix, and the tyre should then be replaced.

Holes on the inner face of the tube point at the rim, not the road; the tape must cover every spoke hole evenly before another tube goes in.

A wheel that is not seated and locked in, or a brake left released so the tyre could pass the pads, is what puts you on the ground. Both are checked before you clip in.

Test 5Pre-Race Bike Check
The path runs front wheel, up the forks to the bars, down to the bottom bracket, up to the saddle, then down to the rear wheel, tracing an M. The value is in the fixed order.

Pads carry moulded grooves as a wear indicator. Check the rim at the same time: braking surfaces wear concave and many rims have a wear indicator line or dimple of their own.

Embedded debris works its way through to the tube over time, and once the casing threads are exposed the tyre can fail suddenly. Two days out is enough time to fit a new one and bed it in.

A quick release clamps by cam action, not by spinning; a thru-axle clamps to a set torque and over-tightening damages it. Both levers are positioned so nothing can snag them.

Chain wear is measured with a chain checker rather than by eye. Replacing a chain early is cheap; leaving it long enough to wear the cassette is not.

The lubricant is needed inside the rollers; anything left on the outside only collects grit. Keep all lube well away from brake pads and rotors.

Slow shifts towards the larger sprockets usually mean slightly low cable tension. Limit screws only set the extremes of travel and should not be touched to cure indexing.

Resting a hand where the fork meets the frame while you rock the bike makes the knock easy to feel. A wobble in a spun wheel is a wheel truing issue, not a headset one.

Small accessory bolts are the most common source of race-day rattles and lost bottles, but the threads are shallow and carbon frames crack, so snug is the target, not maximum force.

Truing a wheel and evening out spoke tension needs the right tools and time; a badly tensioned wheel can collapse under load. The other three are routine jobs.

Test 6Gearing and Terrain
Smaller sprocket at the back or bigger ring at the front both give a harder gear; bigger sprocket or smaller ring give an easier one.

This is cross-chaining. The mirror case, small ring with the smallest sprocket, is worse still, because chain tension is low and the chain can drop. Shift the front ring instead of running to the far end of the cassette.

Keep pedalling, just softly, for one or two strokes. That gives the chain the slack it needs to lift cleanly onto the next sprocket or ring.

In a triathlon the bike is not the last discipline, so the cost of heavy, muscular pedalling shows up in the first kilometres of the run.

Chasing a constant speed turns every rise into an interval and burns matches you will want on the run. Even effort, variable speed, is the cheaper way round.

Momentum does much of the work on a rise this short. Shifting too early throws that momentum away and leaves you spinning out with nothing to push against.

A dropped chain often re-seats itself if the front derailleur cage nudges it while the cranks turn gently. If it does not, pull over safely and lift it on by hand.

A derailleur only moves the chain while you are pedalling, so the easy gear has to be chosen before you stop, and a crank near the top gives you the leverage to get rolling on a gradient. Angle the bike slightly across the slope, push off, then clip the second foot in once you are moving.

If your lowest gear forces your cadence down to a grind, the fix is a lower gear, not more determination. Check the derailleur can handle the larger sprocket before fitting it.

Seated climbing costs less energy for the same speed; standing recruits more muscle and raises heart rate, so it is best used in short bursts rather than as the default.

Test 7Riding in Wind and Weather
A deep front rim acts like a sail, so control comes from a low, relaxed position on the base bar where small corrections are easy. A tight grip transmits every gust straight into the steering.

Large vehicles push air ahead and to the side, then leave a low-pressure wake that draws you in. Expect two separate movements and hold your line rather than correcting hard for the first one.

Headwind resistance is about frontal area, so reducing your height and width is what saves energy. Sitting up or widening your elbows increases the area the wind pushes against.

Gusts move you sideways whether you want them to or not, so the safety margin is space on both sides. Riding close to a wheel or a kerb removes exactly the room you need.

Wet roads and wet braking surfaces both cut stopping power, and disc brakes reduce the problem without removing it. The fix is earlier, smoother braking rather than harder braking.

Reflective material needs a light source such as headlights to work, so in dull daylight it does little. An active rear light plus bright colours is what actually raises your visibility.

Cold hands lose fine motor control, so you brake later and shift clumsily exactly when conditions demand accuracy. Warm gloves are a control measure, not just a comfort one.

Wet grip is limited, so braking and turning should not overlap and lean angle should be reduced. Weight belongs on the outside pedal, which loads the tyres and keeps the inside pedal clear.

In grey rain a dark lens removes light you need to read the surface, while a clear or low-light lens keeps contrast and still stops spray, grit and insects reaching your eyes. If a lens fogs, get airflow behind it by easing the glasses slightly down your nose on a straight, quiet stretch rather than riding half-blind.

Speed in a headwind is not comparable to speed in still air, so pacing should follow effort rather than the number on the computer. Chasing your usual speed burns the energy you need for the run.

Test 8Aero Position and Comfort
Aerodynamic drag rises steeply with speed and becomes the largest force to overcome on the flat. That is why the rider's shape, not the bike's weight, is the main lever.

A position is only fast if you can still breathe and produce power in it. Going lower usually saves more drag than it costs in watts, but past a point the power loss wins, and where that point sits is individual. If power drops noticeably, raise the front slightly.

Holding an aero position is a trained skill, so time in it is built progressively alongside a fit check. Dropping your head to rest the neck removes your view of the road and is dangerous.

You leave the extensions whenever you may need to brake or steer suddenly. A clear straight road is precisely where staying aero is both safe and worthwhile.

Clip-ons move your hands away from the brakes, so secure fitting, clear cable routing and a fast route back to the levers are the safety essentials. Nothing about them requires removing or repositioning other parts.

An aero position rotates the pelvis forward so you sit on a different part of the saddle. This is why saddle position, or a saddle designed for the aero position, usually needs revisiting.

Numbness comes from sustained pressure on nerves in the hands and forearms, so support and variation are the fixes. Gripping harder or locking the arms increases the pressure and the vibration reaching you.

Two large fields can be read with a flick of the eyes, whereas a crowded screen makes you drop your head and steer blind for several bike lengths. Do the setup at home so that on race day you are reading the computer, not operating it.

An aggressive position that you cannot hold, breathe in or steer from costs more time than it saves. Beginners gain most from a position that is comfortable enough to use for the whole leg.

Test 9Nutrition and Drinking on the Move
A bike follows your eyes and your body, so looking down or leaning across pulls you off line. The reach itself should be practised until it can be done by feel.

Drinking takes a hand off the bars, so it belongs where nothing sudden is likely. Corners, descents and the approach to transition all need both hands ready.

Aid stations are crowded and are where most bike-leg crashes happen, so slowing and communicating is what prevents a dropped bottle or a collision. Reaching with the nearest hand means you never reach across your body.

On the bike it is easy to under-drink simply because you are not thinking about it, so a regular pattern helps. Drink steadily to your thirst rather than forcing down large volumes ahead of it, which is what causes hyponatraemia.

The bike is supported and relatively smooth, while running jostles the gut and makes chewing and swallowing harder. That makes it the practical window for anything more solid than a gel.

One hand stays on the bars and your eyes stay up, which means picking your moment on a clear section. Opened gels in a pocket leak and make a mess of your kit.

Appetite cues are blunted by hard effort and often only return once you are already low. Setting a timer or fuelling at known course points removes the guesswork.

Taking in fuel is far easier when you are supported on the bike than when running, so the bike leg sets up the run. Arriving at T2 under-fuelled is very hard to recover from on foot.

Carrying rubbish is a kit problem with a kit solution, and it needs rehearsing like any other skill. Dropping or flicking litter outside a designated zone risks a penalty and holding it occupies a hand.

Gut tolerance depends on both duration and intensity, so only a long ride near race effort reproduces the conditions. Easy or short sessions will let through products that fail on race day.

Test 10Bike Skills Practice
New skills involve mistakes, and a closed, empty space makes those mistakes cheap. Once the movement is reliable it can be taken onto the road.

One-handed riding is built up in short, low-risk repetitions on easy terrain. A descent may feel steadier, but any wobble costs far more at speed and you may need the brakes.

Rotating your torso pushes on the bars and steers the bike, so the movement should come mostly from the neck with a relaxed arm. This is a drill worth practising on a quiet road.

Weight transfers forward under braking, so the front brake provides most of the stopping power and your body moves back to keep the rear planted. Locked wheels stop steering and lengthen the stop.
